East Flanders

East-Flanders is a province situated in the Northwest of Belgium in the Flanders Region. It shares borders with Holland and the provinces Antwerp, Flemish-Brabant, Hainaut and West-Flanders. East-Flanders’ capital is Gent, which is one of the biggest cities in Belgium. Aalst and Sint-Niklaas are other large cities, and are some of the largest in Flanders and Belgium. The province has 1,4 million inhabitants living in its 3.007 km² area.
Culturally, East-Flanders boasts a wide variety of museums, such as Het SMAK in Gent and the Canada War Museum in Adegem. The world renowned beguinages in a.o. Dendermonde and Oudenaarde are worth a visit as well. The same goes for Sint-Martens-Latem’s beautiful scenery and the provincial domain Puyenbroeck in Wachtebeke. It’s worth pointing out the East-Flemish beguinages and bell towers are UNESCO world heritage! Definitely worth a visit!
Rivers like De Schelde, Leie, Durme and Dender are a prominent part of the province. Want to go somewhere? You can use the E17, E40 or E34. The vast network of railways and bus connections is another possibility. In Gent you can get around by tram as well, making it one of the three places in Flanders where this is possible, together with the coast and Antwerp.
