mansion in BelgiumOriginally, mansions were large American dwelling houses, similar to the well known "country houses" in England.  In Belgium, the term is more often used for a historical type of luxurious townhouse, which can be a stand alone or a terraced house. The interior characteristics of such a mansion are heigh ceilings decorated with frescos or elaborate mouldings, wide corridors and large (marble) fireplaces.  They typically contain a cellar and an attic, as well as rooms meant to accommodate particular leisure activities.
